In my experience in counseling families I have come to adopt a multidimensional holistic approach.
I find it helpful to take into account all the dimensions of the family's life when working with them: individual sessions with the child can be paired with family sessions with the parents.
Depending on the circumstances, parents alone could benefit from counseling sessions, addressing their difficulties and designing parenting strategies. In some cases it can be useful to involve the school as well, especially when it comes to academic and conduct issues, specifically in behavioral correction.
Each case is different just as each family is different but there are certain skills and strategies that can be taught to parents to be used at home with their children.
Such training is available in the workshop format exploring specific issues, for example dealing with aggressive children or acculturation into a new country. It can also take the form of a support group for parents dealing with common problems.
The scheduling of such events would be based on expressed demand.
